Harlan H Cornell

Harlan Haggertt Cornell, a longtime resident of Chapel Hill, died March 15, 2010, at the age of 80.

Harlan was born in Charleston, WV, on December 20, 1929, the son of the late Carl Cornell and Lucille Cole. Harlan joined the U.S. Air Force when he was 16 and served primarily in Japan and Okinawa. He then attended Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) and graduated with a degree in business and accounting.

In 1950 he married Martha Jane Hamer and they had four children. After working in various positions, Harlan moved with his family to Chapel Hill in 1967 where he worked in various accounting positions with UNC-CH and North Carolina state government. Harlan was very active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he served as Post Commander of Post 6 in Chapel Hill.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the American Legion Post 6, 1714 Legion Rd., Chapel Hill. A private family internment will follow.

Lawrence H. Jakes was born on August 24, 1939, and passed away on Sunday, July 26th, 2009. He resided in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Lawrence served in Vietnam ferrying combat aircraft to the combat zone.  He was President of the Military Officers Association of America local Orange County Chapter at the time of his death.

Larry, as he was known to the post members, was very active in post affairs and promoted civic actions, community involvement and post participation in any event that would promote veterans programs.
