Hugh Tyson Westray, Sr.

Hugh Tyson Westray, Sr., died Saturday, January 5, 2008, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill at the age of 87.

Hugh was born September 14, 1920, in Goldsboro, the son of Luther Albert Westray and Cassie Tyson Westray. He proudly served his country in the Pacific during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army 227th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Search Light Battalion ("Moonlight Calvary").

He moved to Chapel Hill in 1960, working in the retail furniture and appliance business. He was the owner and proprietor of Hugh's Food and Party Store on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill from 1971 until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the University United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
